Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her)

Seyyada Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was the loving daughter of our beloved Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) and Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). She was born 5 years before the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) declared his mission. Those were the auspicious days when the Quraishites were busy in the reconstruction of Kaba (Tabaqat).

Hazrath Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that she was born when the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) was 35 years of age and kaba was under reconstruction. She was 5 years elder to Hazrath Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) in age.

NAME AND TITLE

Her name is Fathimah (may Allah be pleased with her) She is the youngest daughter of the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) She is one of the four most celebrated and perfect women born so far.

The Prophet of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) said:

“Among the men there have been many perfect: but among the women only four:

1. Asiya (peace be upon her) - The wife of Pharaoh

2. Maryam (peace be upon her) - The mother of Prophet Eissa (Jesus) (peace be upon him)

3. Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) - The wife of our beloved Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him)

4. Fathimah (may Allah be pleased with her) – The daughter of our beloved Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him)

She is the chief of the women of the world and head of the women in the Paradise. Her titles are Tahira, Mutahira, Zakia, Radhia, Mardhia and Batul (Isabah).

Explaining the significance of her names, Fathimah (may Allah be pleased with her), Batul and Zahra, Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that she is named Fathimah, because Allah will protect her and her friends from the fire of Hell and she is called Batul because she was distinguished among the ladies of her age as regards learning, piety and ancestry; and she got the honorific of Zahra, because according to Moulana Shaikh Abdul Haq, she excelled in feminine charms and human excellence, and therefore, she was called as such. Other authorities agree that this is correct explanation.

From her childhood Hazrath Fathimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was very sober, suave and serious. Her other sisters used to take part in games and pastimes, but she would not join them. She did not like going out and visiting people unnecessarily and used to keep herself aloof, always sitting with her mother. The Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) used to appreciate her simplicity and her disregard of the worldly attachments, and therefore, she was called Batul. Because she resembled very much with her father the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) in features and habits, she was known as Zakia and Radhia.

HER MARRIAGE

When the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) migrated to Madinah, Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was unmarried. There were a number of proposals for her, Firstly Hazrath Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) requested for her hand. The Prophet of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) asked him to wait for a heavenly direction (Tabaqat). Hazrath Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) discussed this matter with Hazrath Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him to also propose for his marriage with Hazrath Fathimah (may Allah be pleased with her), which he did and got the same reply from the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him). Then people persuaded Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to try his luck. But considering his straitened circumstances he was reluctant to propose. Also, keeping in view the turning down of the proposals of seniors he thought that he has no chance. But people around him encouraged him to try on the score of his relationship with the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him). However he put up his proposal before the bride’s father, who accepted it. The Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) also talked over this point with Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), saying that Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to marry her. She kept quiet. This silence is considered as approval. Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was married to Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) during the month of Muharram of 2 A.H. some 4 month after the marriage of Hazrath Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) with the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) (Isaba).

Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) collected 480 dirhams by selling some goods to Hazrath Usman (may Allah be pleased with him) in order to meet the expenses of his marriage. He placed this amount before the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) who asked him to spend two – third on bridal dresses, etc and one – third on other items of marriage. (tabaqat).

Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself relates the story of his marriage with Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) in these words. “I had a mind servant, whom I had freed sometime ago, She once suggested that I should propose for my marriage with Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) I replied that I had nothing to meet the expenses of the marriage. In spite of this, she insisted that I should approach the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) and request him for the hand of his daughter. Therefore, I was encouraged by her insistence and went to the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him). But when I met Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him), I was overawed by his personality and could not say anything, and kept quite. The Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) himself enquired if I had gone to him with a proposal for the hand of Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). I replied in the affirmative. He then asked me if I had anything for the payment of Mahr (Dower money). I said nothing. He then suggested that I should sell the Armour which the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) had given to me after the battle of Bad’r and pay for the dower money out of its sale proceeds. The marriage was performed and the Armour was given in lieu of dower money. (Usud – ul Ghaba).

According to another story, some Ansars suggested to Hazrath Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) to propose himself for his marriage with Hazrath Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). When Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came back to the waiting Ansars, they enquired from his the outcome of his mission. Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated the words of the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him). The Ansars asserted that this was enough to convey his assent.

The Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) asked Hazrath Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to wait for him at his house. As such when the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) knocked at the door of their house, his maid servant Umm Aiman (may Allah be pleased with her) opened the door and the following dialogue took place between her and the Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him).

Holy Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him): is my brother inside this house?

Maid Servant: How can he be now your brother when you have married your daughter to him?
